Link building is the tedious part of any search engine optimization campaign that SEO/Link builders painstakingly effort with to get higher SERPs rankings. Most, if not all SEO/Link builders have the same methods of building links but only differ in the approach like, some may just simply bookmark but others would bookmark the bookmarked and etc.
In this post I would like to share with you the fundamentals of link building and the methods that will stand the test of time which I have learned from Benj Arriola an SEO Director in his SEMCon 2010 presentation last October.
Backlinks/backward link/inlinks, or whatever search engine marketers call them, are the links from other websites that point back to your own site that is considered as a “vote” in order your website to rank. But links are not created equal and what does Google look for into a link are the trust, credibility and authority. The quantity and quality of the links, and its relevancy (anchor text, surrounding text, title tag) are also taking into consideration.
We know that Google doesn’t like artificial link building to influence rankings but as we might not know it this is what every SEO does. Because the truth is if you follow Google’s suggestion that the best link building is to go natural, let the people voluntarily link to you, you will not get the result you wanted in time. So, what can you do to your artificial link building to make it appear natural to Google?
Below are the few things to consider.
First, the growth rate of you links. Make it sure you do it gradually and increase it overtime. Avoid a sudden burst of links especially if your site is still fresh. If you load your site tons of link in a day but significantly decreases the next day, and increases the following day this can trigger Google’s spam algorithm putting a red flag in your site.
Although a sudden increase of links is not advisable for new sites but for old domains, preferably 3 years and above, this is okay for the fact that you have established presence and people already know you. In some cases though, a sudden burst of links might still look natural as long as you can maintain the growth rate without creating a high link spike. An example for this is breaking news where thousands of people link to it over time.
Second, the PageRank distribution of your inbound links. Diversity of PR gives your site a natural appearance to Google. How does Google see your site if all your inbound links are from low PR sites? You are probably a spammer using a tool that spams forums, blogs and other sites. What about if all your inbound links are coming from high PR sites? You are probably an evil link buyer that buys link just to influence rankings. So, the safest way is to have a mix of low and high PR backlinks.
Third, the use of link text. Diversify your anchor text. When people link to you normally they don’t care what’s the anchor text they put. They might probably just put your brand/company name, a click here or this or here since they don’t know how important the anchor text would be in terms of SEO but this will look natural to Google unlike if you are just using the same anchor text all over again in all your backlinks this will look unnatural to Google giving them a signal that you are gaming the SERPs with the use of artificial link building. Variation of anchor text is a wise approach. For example if your keyword is flower delivery you can vary this to cheap flower delivery, flower delivery express etc. As long as your main keyword is there you are still good.
Last, the IP address of the link source. Make your inbound links come from different IP addresses. You may be linked from different websites but the IP are all the same you are not receiving the benefits you expected. So, make sure to check your backlinks IP too.
